The way to my heart (and into my pants, or both) is definitely through a great rendition of a West Side Story number, and I think this is probably the best I’ve seen this year…
“This is how it works,
You peer inside yourself,
You take the things you like,
And try to love the things you took.
And then you take that love you made,
And stick it into some,
Someone else’s heart,
Pumping someone else’s blood.
And walking arm in arm,
You hope it don’t get harmed.
But even if it does,
You’ll just do it all again.”
I get to listen to a lot of music, doing the job that I do, which is just as well, because I love music. Of course, much of it is pretty crap, and I’ll admit that I do have odd tastes when it comes to what I like to pump into my ears (why does that sound so dirty?).
I didn’t really know Elbow when I found this album, The Seldom Seen Kid. It’s apparently their 4th studio one, and it’s utterly awesome. Why? Well, I’m gonna get a bit technical here. It’s the production. It’s not something you normally notice in a song, although people like Timbaland have done a great job at bringing it to the forefront of music interest (notice how everything he works on, from JT to the Pussy Cat Dolls to OneRepublic have similar elements underlying the music?). Elbow have awesome production. The way the different instruments insinuate themselves around one another, the rich, deep layers of sound, and the novel little touches that are added, like little surprise bundles waiting to be discovered by the listener. And of course, the songs rock regardless of technical knowledge.
But don’t take my word for it – this is probably my favourite track (which was a hard pick), One Day Like This.
If you buy only one album this month, buy this Mercury Music Prize winning one.
