Happy Halloween!

Posted by WillQ in Uncategorized

Twas the night before hallows, and all through the street,
Undead creatures were stirring and hungry for meat.
The corpses were hung by their necks in the air,
And the spooks were all set to give people a scare.
And I heard a chill whisper echo through the night,
“Happy Halloween to all, may you have a good fright”.

Have a Happy Halloween, boils and ghouls.

Mind the GAP…

Posted by WillQ in Uncategorized

This may be a little late, but The GAP has hit KL’s shores. Americans will know what I mean, but for those who have no idea what I’m on about, you either don’t watch much American TV, or just aren’t that into the whole Capitalist American Cosumerism deal (don’t worry, it’s ok to be a Soviet). The GAP, America’s mid range clothing brand, is now in 1Utama, and you too can be one of the legions of KL-ites sporting a Gap top, jeans or hoody for the next few months at least. I know at least a dozen people who already have at least one article of clothing from there, and this was the weekend it openend. Talk about fast.

For those of you who really can’t wait for the novelty to wear off, and absolutely have to buy something straight away, then follow my tried and true method for keeping your look vaguely original. All you have to do is buy whatever you want, then leave it in the bottom of the wardrobe for a minimum of 6 months. Then only let it cycle through your active clothing. I know it seems a bit stupid, but you’d be amazed at how many people, who were all wearing the exact same shirt a few months ago, will comment on what your wearing and ask where you got it. Try it.

Anyway, speaking of bad ideas, it being Halloween and all, I decided to go and watch a scary film at the cinema, to get “in the mood”. Frostbiten looked damn good on the poster, although I must admit, I hadn’t seen much hype about it (a fact which should have tipped me off…). What I sat down to was two hours of mildly amusing Swedish horror filmaking (apparently the country’s first attempt at a Vampire movie… but we don’t give points for trying, do we?), rendered almost unbearable by the the utterly crap subtitling. I don’t know who proofs the subtitles, but those two names that you see popping up at the end of the film are real morons. If your whole job is simply to translate movie dialogue, you’d think you could at least try and do a passable job of the language you’re working in. Instead, I was wowed by phrases like “I go to there now”, and “I think you not do that”. Seriously, where do we find these people?

Subtitling aside, the film wasn’t terrible, and certainly not the worst horror film I’ve seen (that title goes to the eternally awful “House of the Dead” from a few years back), but not exactly what I was hoping for. I wouldn’t reccomend it, but if you must watch it, look out for the dogs, they’re the best bit. Also, check out the (blatantly bloody obvious) subtle anti-drugs message (Kids… Do drugs, and you end up killing your friends… and eating them. And drinking their blood too…). Still, I can’t fault the premise – a vampire film set in a country with night time that lasts a month. Thank god the movie didn’t.

Fangs for the memories…
